Facebook Watch Party: live discussion groups for TV evenings

Facebook will open its Watch Party service at various music and sports events. Members will be able to comment live in a Champions League game on a special page including results and player statistics.

Social networks can paradoxically isolate their users in front of their screens. Facebook wants to remedy this by offering more contacts and interactions between members around the same televised event.

Watch Party will propose to football fans to comment on a match between friends

After inaugurating the Wacth Party feature , allowing a group of friends to watch videos on the platform and comment on them together, Facebook goes further and will offer users to invite their friends to live together sports or other live broadcasts.

The social network says it will test this new opportunity with future matches in the Champions League . Sports rights requires, out of the question to broadcast online meetings and it will continue to pay a subscription to a TV package to enjoy the games.

A system to encourage interactions on Facebook

Instead, Facebook offers a virtual meeting place for supporters, displaying the real-time score of the game. It will be possible for the creator of the group to launch polls, add quizzes or fun information.

The social network indicates that Watch Party in its current version generates more than 8 times more comments on a video than the conventional viewing mode. It will be interesting to see if the feature meets its audience, or if the ball fans will still prefer the traditional pizza party all together in front of the television .
